Peter Monaghan: Monaghan at 70: Gormleys Dublin
The official opening takes place on Thursday 8th May from 6-8pm in our Dublin gallery
Gormleys is delighted to present an exhibition by internationally recognised Irish artist Peter Monaghan, taking place in Gormleys Dublin from 8th – 26th May.
Marking the artist’s 70th birthday, the exhibition is his most intimate to date, featuring previously unseen drawings and his early design work, alongside the contemporary pieces for which he is known today. The exhibition is accompanied by a book documenting Monaghan’s life and artistic journey to date.
With a career spanning four decades, Monaghan has become one of Ireland’s most celebrated artists, known for his dynamic, three-dimensional pieces that blend abstract and kinetic elements to create powerful visual narratives. His work seeks to evoke an emotional response from the viewer, drawing them into a dialogue between light, colour, movement and texture.
Born in 1955, Monaghan attended NCAD in the 1970’s, before forging a successful career as a graphic designer. In 2000, he gave up his design work to concentrate full-time on his fine art practice. Monaghan has enjoyed a burgeoning artistic trajectory since, with numerous solo and group exhibitions in Dublin, London, New York, Miami, Hong Kong and Singapore.
Monaghan’s artwork has also won national recognition, including the Jim McNaughton Bursary as part of the Business to Arts Awards. His large-scale installations can be seen in prestigious locations such as the V.I.P. Presidential Suite in Dublin Airport, One Grand Parade, Crown Plaza Paris, the Marker and Gibson Hotels, Trinity College, and University
College Dublin’s scientific centre.
“My work is the result of a disciplined research into the experience of looking– the experience of pure visual sensation and aesthetic pleasure. Simple forms and colours are used in repetition to engage the viewer. It is a dialogue about light, colour, movement and illusion;
exploring the relationships and contrasts between painted flat surfaces, protruding
spheres, cubes or geometric shapes. I would like my audience to have a visceral connection with my work. I hope that the joy which I experience in creating the paintings is evident and that enjoyment is passed on to the viewer.” - Peter Monaghan
