Gormleys is proud to present Signal to Surface, an exhibition bringing together four of Ireland’s most exciting contemporary abstract artists: Leah Hewson, Shane O’Malley, Sean Atmos and Peter Smyth.
Running from 9th to 29th April in our Dublin Gallery, this exhibition highlights artists who are pushing the boundaries of contemporary Irish painting and redefining the language of abstraction today.
Although each artist possesses a distinct visual identity, their work is united by a shared commitment to experimentation, material exploration and the emotional power of colour, form and surface. Together, they represent a dynamic and evolving movement within Irish abstraction, one that balances intuition with precision, and spontaneity with structure.
Leah Hewson's work explores the layers of the subconscious through an instinctive painting practice. Shane O’Malley’s paintings investigate energy, movement and layered space, combining gestural expression with architectural structure. Sean Atmos brings a bold, contemporary visual language rooted in colour interaction and atmospheric depth, while Peter Smyth’s work examines form, perception and spatial relationships through refined abstraction and luminous surfaces.
What links these four artists is not style alone, but a shared visual connection- an understanding of how colour, shape, gesture and structure can communicate beyond representation. Their paintings speak to each other through tension and harmony, precision and freedom, creating a cohesive and compelling dialogue across the exhibition. Each artist pushes abstraction forward, yet together they form a unified conversation about the possibilities of contemporary painting in Ireland today.
Signal to Surface offers collectors, critics and audiences the opportunity to experience four powerful and complementary artistic voices in one exhibition- artists who are not only shaping contemporary Irish abstraction, but defining its future.
