Overview

Gormleys is delighted to present an exhibition by British landscape painter Harry Brioche. This will be the artist's second solo exhibition in the gallery, following his sell-out ‘Lighting the Landscape’ exhibition in 2022.

Harry Brioche was born in the Seychelles in 1965. However, following the Coup d’etat of 1977, Harry & his family were forced to flee, finally resettling in Manchester in the UK. Brioche is now based in the Lake District of England where he takes inspiration for his work.

From an early age Brioche was captivated by the drama and beauty of the ever-changing British sky and landscape, which was in sharp contrast to that of the Seychelles. This inspiration at such an early age was and continues to be ever-present in his painting.
"The landscape is almost incidental; my main objectives are to try and capture the atmosphere and 'spirit' of a place. Ultimately it is the mood and light within the painting which become the central theme.

Despite attending Maidstone College of Art, Brioche considers himself a self-taught artist. Following an ultimatum by his college lecturers to conform with the institution's style and methods of painting or leave, he ultimately decided to go it alone. Brioche went on to carve out a highly successful career as an illustrator and graphic designer with his own company; Tom Dick and Harry, working with world-renowned brands including Dr Martens, Coca Cola and BAE Systems.

Brioche has exhibited internationally & extensively throughout the UK for the past 20 years. His work is regularly exhibited at the renowned Mall Galleries in London through the NEAC, ROI and the RBA annual exhibitions.
